Carlos' opinion on Getting off antidepressants

Mental health has been a topic that has caught strongly my attention after my amazing spiritual awakening experience.

Getting to know from first hand what it is to be on a mental health hospital, certainly gave me an experience that probably just some people can actually talk based on what was lived, and not on what the “books or theory say”.

I observed how many women and men end up there taking up to more than 8 different pills. It was astonishing and unconceivable.

Which eventually led to me to question, Is this the “real healing proccess” that is taken by the “professionals” to keep the people “feeling right” or to “heal them”?

Why do people take antidepressants?

The medical side talks about a “brain chemistry imbalance”, but, is this a real thing? And what is the “right balance”?

How can we really define what is the proper balance that has to be reached?

If the person can only sleep 1 hour, wake up 2 hours, then achieve to sleep 2 hours, and so on, until it is morning, then, is this a proper balance? Well, this result I got while being given with antipsychotics and sleeping pills.

If the person not being able to sleep properly, is then given with antidepressant pills for “your depression”, without really doing a proper research, is that the right healing path? Is it right to just give people these medications, and make their body start hurting and shaky. For me, that was the reaction I had when they just decided for themselves to start adding me antidepressants to my medication list. Until I rise up for myself and told the medical team at the clinic that I was not on depression and that those pills were making me feel pain in the body.

My experience on being in a mental health clinic for 9 weeks certainly helped me to learn about the process that some people are living. And I know that a “brain chemistry imbalance” is not what people have. And for sure the blood test will not state “your levels of Risperidone or Prozac are low”.

The conventional medical teams don’t do a proper research and don’t question yet the multiple factors that can actually make a person go into a harsh mental state. Or even question, was it a spiritual emergency or is there a clear pathology?

As soon as they think there is something off, then the conventional answer would be “here you go, take some medications and you will feel better!”… “Oh and if you can’t sleep, then here are some sleeping pills”.. “Oh, you are anxious, here are some anxiolytics” and so on, to try to cover the symptoms and not helping to find the root cause.

Why do the “experts” act like this?

But hey, excuse me, don’t you think that you need first to check the whole spectrum of a human being, the body, the brain and the spirit, and then properly analyze if a medication in a very low dose can be a minimum support, but not the whole basis of the treatment?

The clash of egos in the medical area is another important part that needs to rise their level of consciousness and really be open to know that there is more to what they have been taught in medical school.

Why the numbers of chronic disease expenditure in the US are expected to rise? (CDC) If we are “advancing as society”, is it supposed that this number should be decreasing instead of rising? Yes, we still have an increasing number of population, but either way, having such expenditure for the care of diseases is also just attempting to cure the symptom and not the root cause that originated such state.

So this actually shows us that the current “system” or “routine” to keep the population healthy in all of the senses, body, brain, spiritual, is probably not the best one yet, or leading to the best healthy outcome for the majority of people.

The root cause of depression

What has led people to be in a depression state?

It is a personal duty to find the own healing recipe and to find out what has led the person to such depressive state.

Is it the diet? Is it over eating proccessed foods, sugar, gluten, food additives, or some oils causing brain inflammation? Or is it some food allergies, that can be found by testing out which foods are causing your body inflammation? Is it that the person need a vegan diet or a carnivore diet or a ketogenic diet? Does the person need to add oregano, cinammon, walnuts, cacao powder, ghee to your diet to support your brain? Is the body lacking Omegas or does it has too much?

Is the person repressing emotions? Is the person worried about financial, family, relationship situation? Is the person talking such situations with a therapists or friends? Is the person having some stress relief activities such as excercise, nature walks, dancing, singing, painting, hanging out?

Is the person consciouss that is connected to a higher source or “thinks” it is disconnected or there is no serving and loving “God/Universe/Supreme Power” at all? Does the person allows him or herself to sit in silence and meditate, or there are too many thoughts coming in and out?

Finding what could be the inner root causes of the depression is an important step forward.

It is fine to feel saddness, worry, anger, nervousness. It is part of the human experience.

It is in those moments when the path in front of us, “is unclear and dark”, we start to learn on walking on faith, and learning that love is the light.

With the huge growth of social media and the internet, we as a society watch a lot of images of people that travel, have “fancy things”, a “great relationship”, or that the person is “having success” or anything related to what is considered “great things”. This also had the consequence of generating comparisons within oneself.

“Why am I not travelling, or having that car, that relation, that party, that money, this and that, and so on”.

Pictures and videos we see, but the feelings we don’t.

The “negative” feelings are not as common to be seen on social media. Are feelings that are usually hidden from the rest, because it has been created this idea that we have to be feeling great all the time.

For those who have struggled with such emotions, it is better to find healthy coping mechanisms that can help the person to feel the emotion, not identify with it, and let it go eventually.

These may include therapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy or talk therapy, as well as alternative treatments like herbal supplements or exercise.

It is essential to work closely with a healthcare provider to find the best treatment plan for your specific needs.

What are the withdrawal symptoms associated with stopping antidepressants?

Recognizing antidepressant withdrawal symptoms

When discontinuing antidepressants, some individuals may experience withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms can vary in severity and duration, depending on factors such as the specific medication and dosage, as well as individual differences. Common withdrawal symptoms include dizziness, fatigue, flu-like symptoms, and changes in mood. It is essential to recognize these symptoms and differentiate them from a relapse of the underlying condition.

Safely tapering off antidepressants

To minimize the risk of withdrawal symptoms, it is advisable to taper off antidepressants slowly under the guidance of a healthcare professional. This involves gradually reducing the dosage over a period of time, allowing the brain to adjust to the decreasing levels of medication. Tapering off is generally considered the safest method for discontinuing antidepressants and can help to minimize withdrawal symptoms.

Comparing discontinuation symptoms to relapse

It is important to differentiate between discontinuation symptoms and a relapse of the underlying mental health condition. Discontinuation symptoms typically occur shortly after stopping the medication and are temporary in nature. On the other hand, a relapse of the underlying condition may involve a return of original symptoms and may require alternative treatment options. Consulting with a healthcare provider can help determine the cause of any new or returning symptoms.

Can you stop taking antidepressants without experiencing relapse?

Exploring alternative treatments for depression

If you are considering discontinuing antidepressants, it is advisable to explore alternative treatment options for managing depression. Therapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy or interpersonal therapy, can be an effective addition or alternative to medication for many individuals. Other treatments, like exercise, yoga, and meditation, have also been shown to improve mood and reduce symptoms of depression.

Understanding how antidepressants work

To make an informed decision about stopping antidepressants, it is essential to understand how these medications work. Antidepressants generally work by increasing the availability of serotonin in the brain. By blocking the reuptake of serotonin, these medications help to regulate mood and alleviate symptoms of depression. It is important to consider the potential impact of discontinuing the medication on the brain’s serotonin levels and how this may affect your mental health.

Before deciding to stop taking antidepressants, it is crucial to weigh the potential benefits against the risks.
