Within this journey, concepts such as ego death and the dark night of the soul often arise, prompting individuals to navigate through profound spiritual experiences and challenges.
The journey of self-discovery often involves traversing through challenging and transformative experiences. Two profound phenomena that individuals may encounter on this path are ego death and the dark night of the soul.
These concepts, rooted in psychology, philosophy, and spirituality, invite individuals to confront the deepest aspects of their being, leading to profound shifts in consciousness and personal growth.
Carlos Experience on Ego Death and Dark Night of the Soul
As for my experience during my spiritual awakening, there is no ego death without going through the Dark Night of the Soul.
Both terms are interrelated or linked together, as the experience of a ego death is the “scream” or the soul yelling that the current “character” that one has created is “not good enough”.
During my spiritual practice in the lent of 2020, many questions arise like “what is my purpose” and “what is the meaning of life”, and for sure many more questions and desires came up in terms of love, health, family, career and also the world well-being, as there was a global Pandemic going on.
To describe how ego death feels like, during my Dark Night of the Soul experience, it was like I wanted to disappear a “Carlos” that I was not happy with.
I am not sure if it was my mind or my subsconscious mind or soul bringing up that idea of an Ego Death that day, but sure I was that I wanted to throw away all the things that had my name on it.
I was desperate and have a sort of anxiety to throw away the football jersey with my name and my name tag of the place I worked.
When some friends noticed that something off was going on, they came to my place.
One by one started to be at my place.
Little did they and I knew what a spiritual transformation was like.
Something inside me wanted to change my name and make the “Self” and “Carlos” be gone.
In that mental state or “trip”, during a rushed spiritual – kundalini awakening, a part of me was fully conscious, which is why I probably remember almost every detail of my Dark Night of the Soul, and the other part of me wanted to do the shift from an old and new perspective, what some might talk about a “spiritual bypass”.
My spiritual experience was also one of those that ended up in a mental health hospital, and no wonder why, as I have learned more and more after my experience, what for ancient socities these experiences where a blessing that had to be guided, it seems that for “modern medicine” it is just a mental breakdown that has to be treated with pills.
It is important to bring awareness of such spiritual experiences, and reduce the level of ignorance on such topics.
Stepping into hell is part of the process of a new beginning.
Ego Death: Dissolving the Illusion of Self
Ego death is a term that originated in psychology and has been embraced by spiritual communities. It refers to the dissolution of the ego, the self-constructed identity that individuals create to navigate the world. The ego is a collection of thoughts, beliefs, and perceptions that define one’s sense of self, often creating a separation between the individual and the rest of existence.
Experiencing ego death involves a profound and sometimes disorienting shift in perspective. It is akin to shedding layers of illusion and recognizing the interconnectedness of all things. This dissolution of the ego can occur through various means, such as intense meditation, psychedelic experiences, or profound moments of insight.
During ego death, individuals may feel a loss of boundaries between themselves and the external world. This can be both liberating and terrifying, as the familiar constructs of identity crumble, revealing a more expansive and interconnected reality. The experience challenges preconceived notions of who we are and invites a deeper understanding of our existence beyond the limitations of the ego.
Understanding Ego Death
Defining ego death and its significance
Ego death is a profound and often unsettling experience where individuals undergo a complete dissolution of their sense of self, leading to a transcendent state of consciousness. It is a crucial aspect of the spiritual journey, as it allows individuals to release attachments to their self-identity and ego, leading to a deeper understanding of their true nature.
Personal experiences of ego death
Experiencing ego death can feel like a profound inner transformation, often described as a sense of “dying” to the old self and awakening to a new understanding of existence. It can trigger intense emotions, a sense of rebirth, and a profound shift in consciousness that leads to a greater alignment with the soul’s vibration.
Embracing ego death for spiritual growth
Although ego death can be a scary and intense experience, embracing it opens the door to profound spiritual growth and self-realization. By letting go of the limitations and attachments of the ego, individuals can evolve and expand their consciousness, leading to a deeper connection with the divine and a greater sense of purpose.
The Dark Night of the Soul: Navigating Inner Turmoil
The dark night of the soul, a term with historical and spiritual roots, describes a profound and often painful period of inner crisis. This concept has been explored by mystics, poets, and psychologists alike, capturing the essence of a transformative and challenging journey through the depths of one’s psyche.
The dark night of the soul is characterized by a sense of existential despair, inner turmoil, and a profound questioning of one’s purpose and meaning in life. It often arises during times of significant personal or spiritual growth, serving as a crucible for the transformation of the self. This period can be triggered by life events such as loss, trauma, or a deep yearning for purpose and meaning.
Navigating the dark night of the soul requires a willingness to confront and explore the darkest corners of the psyche. It is a journey of introspection, self-inquiry, and surrender. This process may involve facing suppressed emotions, questioning long-held beliefs, and dismantling the structures that no longer serve one’s true self.

These experiences invite individuals to confront the illusions and limitations of the ego, fostering a deeper connection with the true essence of who they are.
Integration is a crucial aspect of navigating these profound experiences. It involves incorporating the lessons learned and insights gained into daily life. This process may include adopting new perspectives, letting go of attachments, and embracing a more authentic way of being.
Ultimately, ego death and the dark night of the soul are not destinations but rather stages in an ongoing process of self-discovery and personal evolution. These experiences, while challenging, have the potential to lead to profound spiritual awakening, greater compassion, and a deeper understanding of the interconnected nature of all existence.
