What small businesses have to consider as they get much larger

It is the dream of many people to have their own business and be their own boss. If they are lucky enough and hard-working enough to succeed in this, they will quickly find that their mind will turn to thoughts of expansion – especially now as I have employees of their own

In a situation like this, it is very easy for small business owners to be pulled in so many directions at once that they don’t seem to get anywhere at all. This can be because there is no end of sources telling them what they need to be doing, and this will normally amount to a list of several dozen things – all of which I likely to need to be achieved almost simultaneously. Clearly, this will strain any small business’s resources, so the first few steps forward would ideally just be in some key areas.

Staff training programs

It is likely that in small businesses that have simply become bigger, there are many people doing jobs they are not suited to do or at least have not had the right training to complete them properly. As a consequence, the business has been working on the principle of getting by rather than getting on.

In situations like this, a staff training program making sure that people have all the skills they need to do their job well is going to have many positive benefits. This article shows that those who have had the right training have more confidence in what they’re doing, and their morale is also higher. They have a greater ability to solve problems without escalating to management.

Get more from their current traffic and advertising

It is a common belief that if a company wishes to increase leads and sales, they simply have to do more of what they are already doing. So, if they happen to be spending $5000 a month on advertising – they should simply spend $10,000 a month to get twice as many leads

While this might, in some cases, be true, there is also scope to get more from the traffic they’re already getting using a CRO Marketing strategy. There is more to this than meets the eye, so many companies would profit from getting a specialist agency involved to go over their processes and say where they can get more sales or leads from the same amounts of advertising or natural traffic the business is currently getting.

Invest in the right software and tech

Another common trait among small businesses that have simply just gotten bigger is that they are using the same old systems, and usually the same hardware, that they had when they were a small concern. Now the scope of their business has grown tenfold. The actual infrastructure they are using is no longer fit for purpose.

Getting out of this situation will involve investment in software and tech to upgrade what they’re doing. In many situations, such as using cloud storage instead of having on-site servers can have cost savings and an impact on working productivity. This can be especially true if parts or all of the workforce are using a remote hybrid pattern of working or might be distributed around the country or involve freelancers on the other side of the world.

To wrap everything up

Small businesses that get bigger are, without a doubt, success stories. However, if they wish to remain successful, they need to change to keep up with the expectations of their new range of customers.

This will involve training their staff and getting more sales from the traffic and advertising that they already payout for, and in addition, backing these new developments with the software and tech to allow them to move on to the next stage
