6 Best Car Rentals in Cancun Without Credit Card

In 2021, a friend invited me to her wedding in the area of Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

Usually, when I traveled to Cancun, I moved around either by taxi or by bus, but basically I just had the need to stay in the same area or at the Hotel Zone in Cancun, so basically there was no too much need of a transport.

But for this trip, I wanted to have more flexibility and I started to Google around about renting a car.

The issue with Google, is that the top results were basically the well known rental car companies worldwide and in my opinion they have too much requirements, and they ask for a credit card that will be charged for the depost and later be reimbursed.

But I considered that the prices were high, even in comparison to just moving with a taxi, so by curiosity I searched instead on Facebok for car rentals.

There, I finally found plenty of alternatives to the big Car Rental brands.

Local business owners were offering their car rental services, with the availability of picking you up with your rented car at Cancun Airport without a credit card.

At first, it actually sound as a pretty good deal, and it was.

The first company I contacted was Emporio Car Rental.

It was a fast inquiry done by Whatsapp where I did my reservation.

Of course, sometimes doing business by Whatsapp made me a little bit anxious, since it seem a bit out for me, but once I read most of the reviews on Google Maps and on Facebook, I was a bit more calm and decided to give it a try. 

They offered to rent a compact car for $650 pesos at that time, with a deposit of just $2000 that later was reimbursed. I also had to pay $200 pesos extra because I had to give back the car on out of office hours, but still they took me back at the airport early in the morning at around 5:00 a.m.

They also offer to the customers an insurance that is included and the possibility that other driver can use the car.

The whole process for me was really smooth and, it was way better than seeking out for taxis or waiting for bus times.

The car that was given was a Chevrolet Aveo, which helped me to easily move around. It doesn’t take too much gas, and we traveled around the Cancun region. 

Now in another trip I am doing to Cancun, I also contacted them, but since I will only need the car for 2 days, their policy is to rent for at least 4 consecutive days. 

I searched for other options and most of them either ask for at least 3 days of renting a car. They had ok rental prices, not as good as Emporio, but still a good alternative to big brands.

Finally I found Rental Car MX Cancun, who was able to rent me for 2 days, with a cost of $950 pesos per day and a deposit of $2000.

*Update After October 2023 trip to Cancun.*

I went back again to Cancun for a friend’s wedding, and the day I had to travel to Cancun, the flight had a delay of around 30-45 minutes, so I sent a Whatsapp message to Carlos Ramirez, owner of Rentar Car MX.

Despite the delay and then the time it takes to get down the plane, Carlos Ramirez kindly waited for me outside the airport.

After picking me up, we went out the airport and Carlos delivered the car he showed me previously by picture, a Chevrolet Aveo. 

We stopped in the street so that I can sign the contract. The contract was simple, I gave the deposit, paid the days and got the rented car without credit card.

Uber Taxi costs almost the same as a normal Taxi, and yes, taking a city bus can help to move if you are just going to the Cancun City Center to Zona Hotelera, but to truely experience the region, in my opinion, renting a car is the best option to move around the Riviera Maya.
